Hey, how bad could it be if Unisys, Microsoft, and Dell develop
it?
"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three of the world's top computer
companies have teamed up to vaporize the paper chad by
developing an electronic voting system that would overcome the
kind of ballot confusion that wracked the U.S. presidential
election.
Blue Bell, Pa.-based Unisys Corp. said on Thursday it will bring
together hardware from No. 2 PC maker Dell Computer Corp. and
software from Microsoft Corp. in the new voting system."
Can we now look forward to seeing "you have performed an illegal
operation and will be terminated" blue-screens if you vote for
the wrong candidate?
Hey, at least with Unisys involved, any chad involved
would be round.

At the beginning of all my performance-operations, I read this
excerpt from her book, La Robe: "Skin is deceiving... in life,
one only has one's skin... there is a bad exchange in human
relations because one never is what one has... I have the skin
of an angel, but I am a jackal... the skin of a crocodile, but
I am a puppy, the skin of a black person, but I am white, the
skin of a woman, but I am a man; I never have the skin of what
I am. There is no exception to the rule because I am never what
I have".

Utah Gets a Full-Time Anti-Porn Warrior.
UTAH SHOP OFFERS POPULAR VIDEOS WITH THE SEX AND VIOLENCE EXCISED
Issue: Media & Society
CleanFlicks, a video rental outlet in Utah is offering videos
relieved of scenes that include sex, violence and profanity,
thanks to the strong religious beliefs and editing skills of
the owner, Ray Lines. In the CleanFlicks version of "Titanic,"
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett never appear without their
clothes; in "Schindler's List," Liam Neeson as Schindler does
not have sex outside his marriage; in "Planes, Trains and
Automobiles," Steve Martin does not say naughty words; and in
"Saving Private Ryan," soldiers die but they do not bleed a lot.
And business is booming. Although Mr. Lines says his lawyer has
assured him he is on firm legal ground, violating no laws by
altering others' creations, experts in intellectual property
rights and film company executives say not only is the editing
a potential copyright infringement, it is also an impingement
on the rights of artists. Rob Friedman, the vice chairman of
the motion picture group for Paramount Pictures says renting
altered tapes is tantamount to copyright and trademark
infringement. Jack Valenti, executive director of the Motion
Picture Association of America, has asked his lawyers to look
into Mr. Lines's activities. [SOURCE: New York Times (A11),

"I believe that you and her would definitely 'hit it off' and
the conversation would definitely be interesting and fulfilling
for the both of you."
Barbara Walters nabbed Monica Lewinsky. Diane Sawyer got Sammy
"The Bull" Gravano. Ann Curry landed the McCaughey septuplets.
But no media macher has snagged Ted "The Unabomber" Kaczynski,
though not for lack of trying (not to mention sucking up). The
Smoking Gun Web site has obtained an amusing array of letters
sent to the Unabomber by reporters begging for an interview.
The pitches, recently donated by Kaczynski to the University of
Michigan, show reporters cozying up to Kaczynski and dissing
their competitors. Don Dahler, "Good Morning America" national
correspondent, wrote in August 1999 that he was "uniquely
equipped" to interview the Unabomber, since "I was born not far
from where you now live, and have a cabin in the woods west of
Colorado Springs that has no electricity or running water."
Shawn Efran, Dan Rather's producer on "60 Minutes II," slams
his colleagues at "60 Minutes" in a November 1999 letter to
Kaczynski. "Please understand that '60 Minutes II' is NOT the
program on which your brother and mother appeared. They appeared
on '60 Minutes' with Mike Wallace and Lesley Stahl. If you work
with us . . . the folks who produced the story with your
brother will have no input or control. Our story will allow you
to personally refute what they said about you as well as provide
a serious forum for your ideas." "Today's" Katie Couric offered
Ted "a chance to explain your experiences to our huge audience
and also the opportunity to share your views and concerns, which
I know you've long wanted to do." Katie Thomson, "20/20"
editorial producer, requests an interview with Barbara Walters,
"one of the world's most respected journalists." Thomson
suggests a televised sitdown would help boost sales of the book
Kaczynski was writing at the time, "Truth and Lies," promising,
"This interview would help bring more readers to your book and
a better understanding of your legal appeal." CNN's Greta Van
Susteren details her 17 years as a defense attorney and adds,
"No one can dispute that you are an extremely smart man."
Perhaps the lamest offer was extended by David S. Bennahum, a
contributing editor at Wired, who noted that he added the
Unabomber's name to the magazine's subscription list, and added,
"I understand that you have moved to Colorado." The Rocky
Mountain State is where Kaczynski is imprisoned. (PAGE SIX \x96

"To understand why brands of mechanical watches are so sought
after you have to understand why the watches are sought after.
To do that you've got to look at people like Brian Ehrmantraut.
Now 37, Ehrmantraut knew nothing about watches when his
employer, Network Appliance of Sunnyvale, California, went
public in 1995, and he suddenly found himself with lots of
money. All he knew was that James Bond wore a Rolex Submariner,
so Ehrmantraut bought one, too. That was just the beginning.
Today he's a watch junkie, with 80 fancy mechanical watches and
counting. "I discovered that for the price of a Ferrari or two,
I could put together a pretty good collection," says
Ehrmantraut. His latest purchase is a handmade $69,000
Tourbillon by F.P. Journe, who makes only a few dozen watches
a year.
"It's an antidote to the technology I work with every day," says
the semiretired techie. "These things are made by people
sitting at benches, not computers. When you look at one of
these things through a magnifying glass, you can see that a
human being worked on it. It can never match a $50 Swatch, but
I really like the futility of that -- there's something noble
and tragic about it."

The basic IP stack for Earth's Internet was built for
Ethernet-connected networks or computers. It is characterized
by always being connected and having extremely low bit-error
rates, having very reliable Ethernet or fiber-optic connections
between computers, having small amounts of latency between nodes
and dealing with network traffic congestion as opposed to
bit-error rates. For our deep-space links, we're dealing with
many issues that can cause the IP stack to break down, like a
lot of latency, intermittent links and high bit-error rates
because of very low signal strength. We can encounter latency
approaching more than 30 minutes on the link from the orbiter
back to Earth, for example. We borrow a lot of the concepts of
Earth's Internet but come up with protocols that will work in
this deep-space application.

"Exogenous insulin given to diabetic patients has generally
failed to reproduce the glucose homeostasis that exists in
non-diabetics. One important reason for this is that
subcutaneous insulin is delivered to the peripheral circulation
rather than to the portal circulation and directly to the liver,
which is the physiological route in non-diabetics. As a result,
concentrations of insulin reaching the liver are inadequate to
fully activate hepatocytes and provide glucose homeostasis as
in the non-diabetic. Reproduction of this physiological
portal-hepatic delivery of insulin requires an effective
orally-absorbed form of insulin which heretofore has not been
possible. NOBEX Corporation has developed such an orally
bioavailable form of insulin through use of proprietary polymer
conjugation technology."

The old dogma of genetics, prevailing in the textbooks to this
day, was that one gene made one protein. George Beadle and
Edward Tatum won the Nobel Prize in 1958 for their formulation
of this doctrine. Usually it is put, "one gene, one enzyme,"
but an enzyme is a special kind of protein, and today it is most
often expressed as "one gene, one protein." Now, in front of
some of the country's most eminent molecular biologists, Venter
was telling us that there may be ten times as many proteins as
genes. "Perhaps 300,000 proteins," he said at one point.

is what Universal has done with "Meet the Parents," that adds
up to more than $80 million in revenues for the studio. "Meet

Among the various friends and writers lent or given copies were:

Bartholomew. At some point following revision, Lawrence lent
his master copy to D.G. Hogarth, who lightly annotated some of
its margins while in his custody. It is possibly this copy (or
more likely copy ii, see below) that was in Hogarth's possession
when Lawrence wrote Lady Scott in February 1923, "You want a
copy! Unfortunately so do I. Of the six copies which exist only
one has ever been returned by a borrower: and that copy was
foolishly lent a second time, and hasn't come back. So as a fact
I want six copies. Do you think D.G.H. [Hogarth] would trust
you with a loan of his? Shaw apparently won't: Kennington has
lent his to Clutton Brock. Garvin has one. A colonel called
Bartholomew in the War Office has one: and I forget where the
sixth is..." (Garnett, Letters, pp. 399-400). Encouraged by the
positive reception from readers of the Oxford edition, Lawrence
contemplated publication from the corrected 1922 text, but
abridgment was an option over which he would agonize for over
two years.

While the product sold by the movie may be Hitler, the pitch -- that
everything on heaven, earth and presumably beyond merely serves to
bolster this man's divine right of leadership -- can be applied to
just about anything: shampoo, beer, tampons, cars, political
candidates. And this is why it endures: It is ultimately a movie
about persuasion, and no force in contemporary consumer culture
can be said to be held more highly than convincing people what

INTRODUCTION: During the early 70's, the American entertainment
medium saw the rise of two heavy themes in film, stage, and
music. The first, labelled "The Jesus Freak movement", was
heralded by such theatrical hits as "Jesus Christ Superstar",
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "Godspell".
The second theme was the kung-fu movie, distinguished
particularly by the late Bruce Lee, who brought "Enter the
Dragon", "Return of the Dragon", and many more
enthusiastically-received movies with martial arts as the
centerpoint. These two themes dominated a heavy share of the
entertainment market for several years, but despite their
mass-appeal, no one apparently approached the most likely,
sure-fire guaranteed formula: a combination of the two genres.

People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in
many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that
this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are
unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do
these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate
choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive
ability to realize it. Across 4 studies, the authors found that
participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor,
grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance
and ability. Although their test scores put them in the 12th
percentile, they estimated themselves to be in the 62nd. Several
analyses linked this miscalibration to deficits in metacognitive
skill, or the capacity to distinguish accuracy from error.
Paradoxically, improving the skills of participants, and thus
increasing their metacognitive competence, helped them recognize
the limitations of their abilities.

In fact, our language is full of euphemisms to describe such

which is less acceptable than any of the above, is derived from

"the the "hoi polloi" debate
---------------------------
Yes, "hoi" means "the" in Greek, but the first 5 citations in
the OED, and the most famous use of this phrase in English (in
Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta _Iolanthe_), put "the" in front
of "hoi". This is not a unique case: words like "alchemy",
"alcohol", "algebra", "alligator", and "lacrosse" incorporate
articles from other languages, but can still be prefixed in
English with "the". "The El Alamein battle" (which occurred in
Egypt during World War II), sometimes proffered as a phrase with
three articles, actually contains only two: _alamein_ is Arabic
for "two flags" (which is appropriate for a town on the border
between Egypt and Libya), and does not contain the Arabic
article _al_."

Unless you are a friendly foreign government, you cannot buy

horrifying yellowish light that extends from the gun's revolving
muzzle to whatever happens to have just been cut into several
thousand tiny pieces. This weapon helped launch the motto,
"Death from Above." (We considered commissioning patches that
said, "Death from Suburban Traveling Southbound on Hogback

Now I'm going to tell you a true story. Two years ago, this Navy
pilot shows up at Pensacola Naval Air Station. That's where they
teach the new recruits how to fly. And actually he was an
ensign; a brand new Navy aviator. So he goes out and they take
them all on a check ride, and he maxes every check ride. Well,
they hadn't had that happen in years, so they said, "How come
you're so good? How long have you been flying?"
He says "I've never flown a plane in my life until I got here."
And they said, "Come on. What's your secret?"
"Microsoft Flight Simulator." He had hacked a database and built
a database of Pensacola, and so before he goes out on his check
ride, he goes and flies in Microsoft Flight Simulator. It's only
$69, and the new version of Flight Simulator is really, really good.

with shitty food and no women in the mountains of Afghanistan.
For Christ's sake, most case officers live in the suburbs of

officer boils the problem down even further: "Operations that
include diarrhea as a way of life don't happen."

Another problem with the perpetual model is that CIOs have to
fork over an additional 15 percent to 20 percent of what they
paid for the software in annual maintenance fees to cover
product updates and tech support, according to Chuck Phillips,
managing director and software industry analyst at Morgan
Stanley Dean Witter. If CIOs want to receive upgrades, patches
and access to tech support-as inadequate as it can sometimes
be-they have to pay the yearly maintenance fee. Software
companies earn a significant amount of cash from these fees. So
it's in the manufacturer's best interest, at least financially,
to make products that need maintenance and that have to be
continually improved with successive updates, patches and
versions that CIOs pay for up front. In sum, bad software works
for the vendors.

is one which the Taliban can never be charged with. After

assumes, from the accusation of pandering to popular opinion.
Or, at least, they were. For when plans to outlaw radio, the
only public entertainment left, were floated earlier this year,
Afghanistan's ruling clerics suffered a rare crisis of
confidence. How, they wondered, could they ban radio when more
than 70% of the population - including most of their own foot

threats to remove it raised talk of insurrection? That the agent

Maybe because of his limited experience of life generally and
business in particular, Paternot seems to have no real insight
into the weird hothouse environment that made Theglobe's I.P.O.
a landmark event. Instead he tells us the documents for the
preoffering road show "were certainly sleek. We insisted that
our S1 be matte black with hip green graphics, which was very
much considered taboo." (There's a rebel for you.) And he goes
on at some length about his briefly euphoric high life:
Manhattan nightclubs were "mind-blowing." Flying in a private
jet was "phenomenal." Making it to the top was "slammin'." O.K.,
that last example is actually from "Ice by Ice: The Vanilla Ice
Story in his Own Words." But Paternot's offering is less like
a business book than like a pop star's self-serving
reminiscences of a fleeting moment at the top: every success is
the fair result of hard work, every skeptic is a small-minded
player-hater.

Thomas Peterson and Trevor Wallis of the National Climatic Data Center,
writing in the meteorological journal Weather, also tackled the running
vs. walking controversy. "We decided to deal with this with scientific

of these molecules so they executed Shor's algorithm and
correctly identified 3 and 5 as the factors of 15. "Although
the answer may appear to be trivial, the unprecedented control
required over the seven spins during the calculation made this

said.
