I came away from France believing in the strong faith of the
French people, not because of their magnificent cathedrals, but
because I saw them drive around L'Arc du Triomphe. As they
careened around this monument in vehicles that were little more
than motorized Altoid containers, they looked like a network
run by Linux servers: little packets hurtling within inches of
each other, traveling together for a time, separated by other
packets coming from other sources, reassembling as they sped
out of the circle and onto the Champs Élysées. It's no surprise
to me that much of the interest in IPv6 is coming from France
-- if they don't understand delay-sensitive traffic in France,
they understand it nowhere."

Residents of this Sellwood wanted a community focus in their
neighborhood, so they claimed a local street intersection as
their own public square. The neighbors first constructed
representational elements of a public square: a Tea Station ,
where free, hot tea is available 24 hours a day; an Information
Station; a Produce Station where people can get, give away or
exchange food freely, and the Tree of Life, which symbolized
the new feeling of community. The neighborhood then held a block
party and painted a design in the intersection to define the
space. Although the City bureaucracy was initially opposed to
the idea, the project soon won the support of the City Council
and the Mayor of Portland. In January 2000, the Council passed
a City ordinance that allows any group of citizens to convert
certain street intersections into public squares in their very
own neighborhood.

"Language is ever-changing. This is particularly true in prisons,
where there is the motion of people coming and going, a culture
based on a unique set of circumstances, and the need to speak
in words that often carry depths of meaning. There are forms
of expression that can never be fully understood by the outside
world. There are also words that vary from race to race, prison
to prison -- as well as slang that find its way into prisons
from the outside. As a result, this list will never be
complete, and may contain some words that are not current or
others that are not used at a particular prison or in a
particular state. Please feel free to submit new words to this

If you ever do find yourself working for a startup, here's a
handy tip for evaluating competitors. Read their job listings.
Everything else on their site may be stock photos or the prose
equivalent, but the job listings have to be specific about what
they want, or they'll get the wrong candidates.
During the years we worked on Viaweb I read a lot of job
descriptions. A new competitor seemed to emerge out of the
woodwork every month or so. The first thing I would do, after
checking to see if they had a live online demo, was look at
their job listings. After a couple years of this I could tell
which companies to worry about and which not to. The more of an
IT flavor the job descriptions had, the less dangerous the
company was. The safest kind were the ones that wanted Oracle
experience. You never had to worry about those. You were also
safe if they said they wanted C++ or Java developers. If they
wanted Perl or Python programmers, that would be a bit
frightening -- that's starting to sound like a company where
the technical side, at least, is run by real hackers. If I had
ever seen a job posting looking for Lisp hackers, I would have
been really worried.

With the Olympics safely underway, gun battles in Utah are just
heating up, a LAT fronter reports. Gun advocates argued
unsuccessfully for lock boxes at Olympic venues, leaving no
place for them to store their concealed weapons. "Leaving your

University of Utah, whose president has banned guns from campus.
"It's a two-edged sword," says a U of U student. "From his [the
university president] perspective, he thinks if professors or
students knew there were students who were concealing firearms,
they might not be at liberty to speak freely. But the Catch-22
is, those students who carry may feel like they can't speak
freely if you take away the power to defend themselves."

Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting
to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we
know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we
know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown
unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know. And if one looks
throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is
the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones.

"Quantum gravitational states have been observed for the first
time. An experiment with ultracold neutrons shows that their
vertical motion in Earth's gravitational field come in discrete
sizes. Quantum properties -- such as the quantization of
energies, wavelike dynamics including interference, and an
irreducible uncertainty in the simultaneous measurement of
position and momentum -- usually emerge only at the atomic level
or under special circumstances (e.g., low temperatures) wherein
a particle is trapped in a potential well by a controlling
force. Observing such properties in phenomena governed by the
electromagnetic or the weak and strong nuclear forces is common
enough, but the strength of gravity, many orders of magnitude
weaker than the other forces, has not previously been strong
enough to enforce the kind of confinement needed to make quantum
reality manifest.
This is not what a quantum gravity researcher would call "a test
of quantum gravity", insofar as it does not demonstrate that
the gravitational field is quantized. What this is, is a test
of the effects on quantum matter of a classical gravitational
field. In other words, as the Nature article says, it shows
that gravity "can have a quantum effect" on other particles.
But it does not show that gravity itself is quantized."

Because the collapsing bubbles produced temperatures as hot as
those found in the sun, the experiment does not mean that the
long-sought goal of cold fusion has been achieved, scientists
warned.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
WHAT'S NEW Robert L. Park Friday, 1 Mar 02 Washington, DC
1. BUBBLE FUSION: A COLLECTIVE GROAN CAN BE HEARD. A report out
of Oak Ridge of d-d fusion events in collapsing bubbles formed by
cavitation in deuterated acetone, is scheduled for publication in
the March 8 issue of Science magazine. Taleyarkan et al. observe
2.5 MeV neutron peaks, evidence of d-d fusion, correlated with
sonoluminescence from collapsing bubbles. Pretty exciting stuff
huh? It might be, if the experiment had not been repeated by two
experienced nuclear physicists, D. Shapira and M.J. Saltmarsh,
using the same apparatus, except for superior neutron detection
equipment. They found no evidence for 2.5 MeV neutron emission
correlated with sonoluminescence. Any neutron emission was many
orders of magnitude too small to account for the tritium
production reported by the first group. Although distinguished
physicists, fearing a repeat of the cold fusion fiasco 13 years
ago, advised against publication, the editor has apparently
chosen not only to publish the work, but to do so with unusual
fanfare, involving even the cover of Science. Perhaps Science
magazine covets the vast readership of Infinite Energy magazine.

"Unless you earn your living as an intellectual property lawyer,

Which is where the euro comes in. As columnists like Stelzer
and William Rees-Mogg in the London Times pointed out, the euro
is an Argentine currency board on a much larger scale, uniting
the currencies of twelve European nations from Finland to
Sicily. This currency union also has a "one-size-fits-all"
monetary policy on the Argentine model. Which means that no
monetary policy set by the European Central Bank can possibly
suit both Germany (whose economy is faltering and needs the
boost of low interest rates) and Spain (which is inflating and
needs the correction of higher ones.)

they can write. This is not true. It is true, however, that
everyone can direct. I believe that the Laws of Karma do not
apply to show business, where good things happen to bad people
on a fairly regular basis. I believe that what doesn't kill us
makes us bitter. I believe that the obsessive worship of movie,
TV and sports figures is less likely to produce spiritual gain
than praying to Thor. I believe that Larry was a vastly
underrated Stooge, without whom Moe and Curly could not conform
to the comedy law of three (thanks, Lee). I believe my kids are
secretly proud of me. I believe that if you can't find anything
nice to say about people whom you've helped to make wildly
successful and then they stabbed you in the back, then don't
say anything at all. I believe I have a great dog, maybe the
greatest dog in the whole wide world, yes, he is! I believe that
when ABC reads this, I'm gonna be in biiiig trouble. I believe
that Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High", is the greatest
rock song ever recorded. Once again, thanks for watching "Dharma

Science wasn't a form of proof. It was a style of quarrelling.
The reason science gave you sure knowledge you could count on
was that it wasn't sure and you couldn't count on it. Science
wasn't the name for knowledge that had been proved true; it was
the name for guesses that could be proved false.

Researchers say Pioneer 10, which took the first close-up
pictures of Jupiter before leaving our solar system in 1983, is
being pulled back to the sun by an unknown force. The effect
shows no sign of getting weaker as the spacecraft travels deeper
into space, and scientists are considering the possibility that
the probe has revealed a new force of nature.
"It's the same magnitude and the same direction, namely pointed
toward the sun. The force points to the sun in both cases," said
Anderson.
The motion of these spacecraft is governed by the gravitational
fields of the known bodies in the solar system, and can be
calculated very accurately from general relativity. Anderson's
analysis shows a small but systematic departure from the
expected motion. Indeed, the spacecraft move as if they were
subject to a new, unknown force pointing towards the Sun. This
force imparts the same constant acceleration, ap, of about 10-7
cm s-2 to all three spacecraft, about ten orders of magnitude
less than the free-fall acceleration on Earth. Such a finding,
if it were not explained away by some mundane effect, would be
a major break with accepted physics.

The young dolphin gives a quick flip of her head, and an undulating
silver ring appears--as if by magic--in front of her. The ring
is a solid, toroidal bubble two feet across--and yet it does not
rise to the surface! It stands erect in the water like the rim of
a magic mirror, or the doorway to an unseen dimension. For long
seconds the dolphin regards its creation, from varying aspects and
angles, with its vision and sonar. Seemingly making a judgement,
the dolphin then quickly pulls a small silver donut from the larger
structure, which collapses into small bubbles. She then "pushes"
the donut, which stays just inches ahead of her rostrum, perhaps
20 feet over a period of up to 10 seconds. Then, stopping again,
she regards the twisting ring for a last time and bites it--causing
it to collapse into a thousand tiny bubbles which head--as they
should--for the water's surface. After a few moments of reflection,
she creates another.

Both themes -- teenage sexual activity and the sexual abuse of
children -- have inspired countless literary works. William
Shakespeare created the most famous pair of teenage lovers, one
of whom is just 13 years of age. See Romeo and Juliet, act I,
sc. 2, l. 9 (She hath not seen the change of fourteen years).
In the drama, Shakespeare portrays the relationship as something
splendid and innocent, but not juvenile. The work has inspired
no less than 40 motion pictures, some of which suggest that the
teenagers consummated their relationship. E.g., Romeo and Juliet
(B. Luhrmann director, 1996). Shakespeare may not have written
sexually explicit scenes for the Elizabethean audience, but were
modern directors to adopt a less conventional approach, that
fact alone would not compel the conclusion that the work was
obscene.

69. Why You Still Don't Have Broadband, Part 1: Last June, DSL
provider Northpoint Communications, already operating under
Chapter 11 protection, abruptly ends service after it fails
to secure additional funding. The move leaves 100,000
customers (including 20,000 businesses) without Internet
access.
70. Why You Still Don't Have Broadband, Part 2: In April 2001,
Rhythms NetConnections CEO Catherine Hapka resigns, one day
after the company reveals in a regulatory filing that she
received a 10 percent raise while leading the company to a
Nasdaq delisting and is in line for a $400,000 golden
parachute. Hapka also reaps $21.5 million from the sale of
Rhythms stock. Company officials claim that the company has
enough cash to last well into 2002. Five months later, the
DSL provider closes up shop.
71. Why You Still Don't Have Broadband, Part 3: "There will
always be crybaby boobies who are unhappy with any company."
-- Martha Sessums, spokeswoman for DSL provider Covad,
illustrating in an interview with News.com the
customer-service strategy that helped her company plummet
into bankruptcy.
72. Why You Still Don't Have Broadband, Part 4: "I don't get up

Hart, to the New York Times, shortly before her company
files for Chapter 11.

Hello and welcome to Dorchester where a very good crowd has
turned out to watch local boy Thomas Hardy write his new novel
'The Return of the Native' on this very pleasant July morning.
This will be his eleventh novel and the fifth of the very
popular Wessex novels. And here he comes! Here comes Hardy
walking out toward his desk, he looks confident, he looks
relaxed very much the man in form as he acknowledges this very
good natured Bank Holiday crowd. And the crowd goes quiet now
as Hardy settles himself down at the desk, body straight
shoulders relaxed, pen held lightly but firmly in the right
hand, he dips the pen in the ink (the announcer becomes
excitied) and he's off, its the first word, but it is not a
word... oh no its a doodle way up on top of the left hand
margin. It is a piece of meaningless scribble, and he's signed
his name underneath it. Oh dear what a disappointing start, but
he is off again and here he goes the first word of Thomas
Hardy's new novel, at 10:35 on this very lovely morning, it's
three letters it's the definate article and it's THE, Dennis

Excerpt from "Retreat, Hell! - The Epic Story of the 1st Marines
in Korea": Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment,
Yudam-ni, 4:00 A.M.: PFC LeRoy R. Hintsa was in a tent, resting,
in the valley when the fighting erupted in the hills. "We heard
explosions and then a piece of shrapnel came through and hit a
water can. From here on, all hell broke loose that night," he
said. "We didn't know what was going on until early morning."
Hintsa jumped into the nearest foxhole and stayed there the rest
of the night. Just before dawn the wounded began slipping,
sliding down the hillsides toward the aid tents. Many couldn't
get out of their holes and were freezing. So Hintsa and others
started toward the top with stretchers to help out. He made
several trips, then rested briefly. A marine staggered by toward
the aid tent. "His lower jaw was missing. All he had was frozen
red icicles on his face," Hintsa said. A corpsman came over,
told the wounded marine there was nothing he could do, that when
he thawed, he would die. Then he handed him a pencil and a piece
of paper and told him to write a letter home. "The last time I
saw him," Hintsa remembers, "he was sitting outside the aid tent
writing a letter." ("Retreat, Hell! - The Epic Story of the 1st

But as with so many matters in Utah, the power behind the putsch

Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Working secretly to avoid a public
backlash, the Mormon church wielded its clout to vanquish a

hostile to Mormons, according to documents freshly unsealed by
a U.S. District Court judge in Salt Lake City. The breakthrough
came in December 2000, when AT&T Corp., which had inherited the
Tribune as an unintended consequence of its 1999 merger with
Tele-Communications Inc., agreed to sell the Tribune to the
church's chosen buyer, MediaNews, for $200 million.

Marcus is a real pest. He calls me up and says, "Let's play,

he gets here and we start playing. He plays fast, and so do I.
It's fun. Faster! Faster! "Let's try something in 9, but fast."
He brings a six-pack of Moosehead beer, and drinks four of them.
After two beers he says, "Hey, let's record something." That's
how those two pieces got on the CD. Out of 50 hours of recording
we had two things that really worked. Finally, after four beers
he gets up, goes to the toilet and urinates loudly, leaving the
door open. He'll shout out something like "You know why I like
Moosehead?" I say, "No, why do you like Moosehead, Marcus?" He
says, "Because you can just PISS IT RIGHT OUT." Wow. Talk about
pleasure. Now my wife, whenever we go out says, "You know why

What can be done in a single state? A great deal. We will repeal
state taxes and wasteful state government programs. We will end
the collaboration between state and federal law enforcement
officials in enforcing unconstitutional laws. We will repeal
laws regulating drugs and guns. We will end asset forfeiture
and abuses of eminent domain. We will privatize utilities and
end inefficient regulations and monopolies. Then we will
negotiate directly with the federal government for more
autonomy.

The simple, three-color spectrum of chocolate -- milk, semisweet

three years. Some manufacturers are making milk chocolate
stronger, beefing it up with more cocoa and less sugar. But even
more dramatic changes are being made by those who are now
calling their product simply "dark chocolate."

Q. In your review of "Sweet Home Alabama," you note the
La-Z-Boy reclining rockers in the home of Reese Witherspoon's

the man makes the decisions." If the La-Z-Boy company doesn't
license this slogan from you, then they are not the shrewd
organization I've grown to know and love. Here is a corollary
to your observation: A La-Z-Boy in anything referred to as "the

the woman makes all the decisions in a relationship? You walk

I have long argued that degree-granting programs should
employ "fire-walking" as a last exam. The chair-person of the

while a degree candidate is forced to walk over the coals. If
the candidate's belief in physics is strong enough that the feet
are left undamaged, the chairperson hands the candidate a
graduation certificate. The test would be more revealing than
traditional final exams.

"COMPUTING PROJECT FIGHTS BIOTERRORISM
Anyone with a computer can now join the war on terror by allowing
excess processing time to be used by the Bioterrorism Antidote
Project. As reported by ZDNet Australia, the non-profit organization,
Find-a-Drug, will use a distributed computing network similar to
SETI@home to form its Bioterrorism Antidotes project, designed to
find new drugs that are effective against antibiotic-resistant forms
of diseases such as plague, smallpox and anthrax. So far the network
has 1,982 registrations, defined as successful installs, and 640
members, defined as those who have returned results."

Seven years ago the SoloTrek XFV idea was born on the back of
a napkin in Silicon Valley. On December 18, 2001, the SoloTrek
POC (proof-of-concept) aircraft demonstrated its first manned
flight. Although the altitude was only about two feet, and the
duration only about 25 seconds, it nonetheless showed that the
machine could get off the ground and be controlled in hover
flight.

First, some background: The Bren School of Environmental Science and
Management at UC Santa Barbara is housed in the Bren building. The
Bren building is the greenest building in the state -- it incorporates
all kinds of environmentally intelligent techniques into its
construction and operation. It's a real showpiece.
The school has just installed a roofcam on Bren that provides realtime
images of the ocean across the road. The update rate is ten or fifteen
images per second. It's not top-quality video, but you *can* watch the
waves breaking on the Santa Barbara beach in real time. You can even
see the cars go by.
It's more fun to watch in the daytime than at night.
